Welcome to the Physics & Mathematics Computer Laboratory

This Laboratory was funded through a National Science Foundation Grant  (Project Description) with matching funds from Elmhurst College alumni, faculty and staff, and friends of the College.  The Laboratory is located in the basement of the Schaible Science Center.  The laboratory consists of eight Pentium-based computers with 21" monitors and primary software consisting of  mathematics software MAPLE and FOURIER, plus Corel -WordPerfect Suite, Scientific Notebook, and PSL (Personal Science Laboratory) with accompanying Vernier Software and hardware for gathering data.

       Summer Workshop for Faculty

July 1997

Drs. Marie Baehr and Mark Timko of the Physics Department presented a two-day workshop on the software program MAPLE for faculty in the sciences and social sciences.  The first day of the workshop was to familiarize the faculty with MAPLE.  On the second day,  faculty worked on research problems or developing material for the classroom.

Elmhurst College Summer Science Academy

Dr. Evans Afenya, Associate Professor of Mathematics, directs the Elmhurst College Summer Science Academy.  In August, students from local high schools and  Elmhurst College students used the computers and the software MAPLE. The students had an opportunity to examine various areas of the sciences including Physics, Biology, Chemistry, and Geography along with Mathematics, Computer Science, Psychology, International Studies, and English.  Highlights of the program included a visit to Fermi National Laboratory where Drs. Earl Swallow and Mark Timko do research in high energy physics.
