Description of Majors

Geography & Geosciences Major
A major in the Department of Geography & Geosciences emphasizes the interactions and relationships between people and their physical and cultural environments. The curriculum effectively links the social and natural sciences. It is often the perfect complement to a major in one of the other social sciences, such as business or history. Students can double major (the versatility of a double major or a minor in geography is attractive to many employers) or take a geography minor. Students with an interest in both the social and natural sciences should consider a major in geography and geosciences.

The Department of Geography & Geosciences actively participates in the interdisciplinary majors of intercultural studies, urban studies, logistics and transportation management.

Majors in geography and geosciences prepare for a variety of occupations. Career opportunities include urban, regional, resource, and recreational planning; business positions in marketing, industrial and retail site selection, and transportation; real estate; teaching; cartography, remote sensing imagery interpretation and geographic information systems; and a broad range of government positions at the federal, state, and local level. Some students prepare for graduate study.
