BUS 230 Principles of Marketing

A study of the functional aspects of marketing, the operations of marketing, the operations of our marketing systems and methods by which marketing decisions are made. Emphasis on strategy development through the application of sound marketing principles.
Prerequisite: Sophomore standing or consent of instructor.


BUS 250 Management Theory

Concepts and principles of management, historical developments in management, the functions of management (planning, organizing, directing, coordinating and controlling) and systems approach to management.
Prerequisite: Sophomore standing.


BUS 261 Financial Accounting

Principles of accounting theory and practice involving the study of the accounting cycle, and preparation and analysis of financial statements.
Prerequisite: MTH 151 or 162.


BUS 262 Management Accounting

A study of the use of accounting as a basis for intelligent business decisions in planning and control. The mechanics and details of accumulating data are de-emphasize and the application stressed.
Prerequisite: MTH 151 or 162, IS 220 or 221, and BUS 261.


BUS 263 Managerial Accounting and Finance

A study of the use of accounting and the principles of financial management for business decisions in planning and control.
Prerequisite: BUS 261 and IS 220 or 221.


BUS 301 Business Logistics

An introduction to the interrelated activities involved with the inbound, in-process and outbound movement and storage of goods as well as the related information from the manufacturer to the consumer. Special emphasis is placed on the functional areas of logistics such as customer service, transportation, inventory control, warehousing and packaging.
Prerequisite: None.


BUS 305 Transportation Management

A survey of the functional areas of transportation management and its interface with other business and logistics activities such as marketing, finance and production. Topics include many aspects of the line and staff functions of traffic management such pricing in the deregulated environment, freight loss and damage claims, sources of legal influences, strategic planning, shipment planning and documentation.
Prerequisite: BUS 3O1 or consent of instructor.


BUS 307 Strategic Warehouse Management

An introduction into the critical role that the warehousing function plays in today's business environment. The course examines current concepts, theories and applications of warehousing activities in relation to the distribution of goods and services. Subjects include warehouse strategies, ownership alternatives, layout and design, location, customer service, bar coding, material handling and measuring warehouse productivity.
Prerequisite: BUS 301 or consent of instructor.


BUS 309 Transportation Carrier Management

Carrier management examines the issues and problems associated with the operation, finance, marketing and pricing in today's competitive business environment. Subjects include mergers and ownership, costing, competition, regulations and other management decision areas.
Prerequisite: BUS 301 or consent of instructor.


BUS 331 Sales

Basic concepts, processes and techniques of selling including customer analysis, effective communication, handling objections and developing customer satisfaction. Preparation of actual sales presentation by each student.
Prerequisite: BUS 230.


BUS 332 Retailing Management

A study of types of retail institutions, organizations, store location, buying and merchandising techniques, advertising and sales promotion, and inventory control.
Prerequisite: BUS 230.


BUS 334 Advertising

Social, economic and legal aspects of advertising. Emphasis on advertising as a communications tool with practical applications of theory to specific problems. Strategy and tactics of management decision-making regarding advertising, with a focus on the mass selling techniques, including evaluation of effectiveness.
Prerequisite: BUS 230.


BUS 335 Consumer Behavior

The analysis and interpretation of consumer buying behavior, stressing the contributions of psychology, economics and socio-cultural influences. Contemporary models of consumer behavior are studied, emphasizing the relationship of behavioral science theory to marketing management decision-making.
Prerequisite: BUS 230.


BUS 336 Marketing Research

A study of research methods and the collection and use of internal and external information for analysis and decision-making in marketing problems.
Prerequisite: BUS 230 and MTH 345.


BUS 340 Business Finance

Principles underlying the financial management of a business enterprise. Among the topics discussed are financial analysis and planning, working capital management and basic capital budgeting.
Prerequisite: BUS 262 or 362, ECON 211 and 212, MTH 151 or 162 and 345; junior standing or consent of instructor.


BUS 351 Organization Theory

A critical examination of a wide range of organizational theories such as systems, socio-technical, contingency and classical. Topics discussed include organization structure, control, effectiveness, design and technology.
Prerequisite: BUS 250.


BUS 353 Managerial Development for Women
Half Course

A study of selected management issues and theories and the special problems and approaches that are required of women in typical organization settings. Emphasis on skill building, particularly in the areas of leadership and effective communication.
Prerequisite: BUS 250.


BUS 354 Human Resource Management

A study of personnel policies and practices covering selection, training, job analysis and evaluation, benefits, salary administration, employee communications, union relations and government requirements.
Prerequisite: BUS 250.


BUS 357 Operations Research I

Same as MTH 365. Operations Research involves designing mathematical models which describe and solve problems encountered in business, economics and social sciences. Topics include decision theory, utility theory, linear programming using the simplex method, sensitivity analysis, the transportation and assignment problems, network models with PERT/CPM, and inventory models using deterministic and probabilistic demand.
Prerequisite: MTH 151 or 162 and MTH 345.


BUS 358 Operations Research II

Same as MTH 366. Selected topics include games theory, integer linear programming, simulation: waiting line or queing models, dynamic programming, Markov processes and job scheduling.
Prerequisite: MTH 151 or 162 and MTH 345. Operations Research I is not a prerequisite for Operations Research II.


BUS 361 Intermediate Accounting I

Theory and analysis of valuation applied to assets of the balance sheet and to the related revenue, cost and expense for income determination.
Prerequisite: BUS 261 with a minimum grade of "B", IS 220 or 221.


BUS 362 Intermediate Accounting II

income tax allocation and leases. Theory and analysis of valuation applied to liabilities of the balance sheet and to the related revenue, cost and expense for income determination.
Prerequisite: BUS 361 with a minimum grade of "C".


BUS 363 Advanced Accounting I

A study of special accounting principles and problems for fiduciaries, government and not-for-profit organizations. Accounting theory and practice applied to price-level adjustments, full-disclosure, pension plans, cash flow statement, installment sales and reporting of segments.
Prerequisite: BUS 362 with a minimum grade of "C".


BUS 364 Advanced Accounting II

A study of special accounting principles and problems for branches, consolidations, partnerships, and financial statements of foreign affiliates. Accounting theory of foreign currency transactions.
Prerequisite: BUS 362 with a minimum grade of "C".


BUS 365 Business Law

Legal problems confronting people in their relationships with the business world. Subjects include contracts, agency, employment, negotiable instruments, real and personal property, bailments and sales. Social Science requirement for non-business majors.
Prerequisite: junior standing.


BUS 401 Logistics Seminar-Policies, Issues and Problems

An advance course for the study of logistics issues, problems and policies in the competitive business marketplace. The focus of the seminar class is to apply current logistics theories and practices to case study situations. Subjects include supply channel management, benchmarking, zero-based inventory philosophies, transportation policy and regulation, contract logistics, national transportation policy and quality logistics performance.
Prerequisite: BUS 301 or consent of instructor.


BUS 430 Marketing Problems

A capstone course stressing the application of decision-making approaches in marketing management. Cases are used in studying problems encountered in planning, executing and controlling marketing strategy. Topics include analysis of buyer behavior, advertising and sales promotion, pricing, channel selection and product policies.
Prerequisites:: major in marketing and senior standing.


BUS 441 Advanced Business Finance

A study of capital budgeting under risk, capital structure, dividend policy and tax effect on decision-making.
Prerequisite: BUS 340.


BUS 442 Investments

A study of the basic principles and current practices of the investment field. Focus is on the construction of securities portfolios, security markets, analysis of types of securities, and timing and selection.
Prerequisite: BUS 340.


BUS 444 Financial Institutions

A study of financial management of different kinds of financial institutions; their regulation, investment practices, risk levels and management issues. Primary focus is on depositories with some discussion of contractual financial institutions and finance companies.
Prerequisite: BUS 340.


BUS 450 Independent Study

For senior students who wish to pursue additional study of topics developed in other business courses. The precise format is determined by the nature of the topic, student ability and the instructor with the approval of the director. A limited number of students are accepted on the basis of academic grade-point average, faculty recommendation, professional progress and demonstrated interest. Repeatable under special circumstances to a maximum credit of two courses.
Prerequisites: Major within Center for Business and Economics, senior standing and consent of the director. Upon request.


BUS 450 Independent Study In Logistics and Transportation Management

An independent research or study course on specific logistics or transportation subjects. The course is designed for select students to pursue an in-depth investigation of a current topics or conduct a relevant research project related to the field of logistics and transportation management.
Prerequisite: Consent of instructor.


BUS 453 Organization Behavior

Current concepts of human behavior as applied to business organizations. The problems of human behavior and human relations in decision-making, policy formation and interpersonal conflict are considered.
Prerequisites: BUS 250 and 351.


BUS 454 Leadership and Administrative Practices

An examination of various leadership, managerial and administrative concepts and philosophies. The course places emphasis on the development of attitudes and values appropriate to professional management. The course uses an action learning approach to integrate the various theories and concepts presented.
Prerequisites: BUS 250, BUS 351 or SOC 315 or consent of instructor.


BUS 456 Business Policy

A capstone course designed to integrate the separate functional activities into the effective operation of an on-going organization. Emphasis is placed on policy formulation and strategic planning requiring analysis of complex business situations.
Prerequisites: BUS 230, 250 and 340.


BUS 457 Compensation Management

An examination of the area of compensation and its relation to organizational effectiveness and employee satisfaction. Job analysis, job evaluation, benefits evaluation and total compensation package review are studied. Related legislation is reviewed.
Prerequisites: BUS 250 and 354.


BUS 458 Management and Society

A study of the growing interrelationship between the business community and society-at-large, exploring factors external to the firm which impact the ability of the firm to do business. Methods for incorporating the business environment into the planning process and for developing business sensitivity to social and political issues and responsible corporate conduct are analyzed. Social Science requirement for non-business majors.
Prerequisite: Junior standing or consent of instructor.


BUS 460 Cost Accounting

A study of the principles and procedures used in the collection, recording and reporting of costs; job order costs, process costs and standard cost; analytical accounting for managerial decisions.
Prerequisites: BUS 262 or BUS 361 with consent of instructor, MTH 162 and MTH 345.


BUS 462 Income Taxation I

A study of the legal and accounting aspects of the federal tax on incomes. Emphasis is on specific problems through actual preparation of individual, partnership and corporate returns using current tax forms.
Prerequisite: BUS 362 or consent of instructor.


BUS 463 Income Taxation II

A study of accounting practice and law as related to computation and reporting for federal income taxes of advanced partnerships and corporate returns, and fiduciaries, including advanced capital gain and pension plan reporting.
Prerequisites: BUS 363 and 462.


BUS 466 Auditing

Auditing theory and procedures for use both in private and public accounting. Emphasis on internal control, generally accepted auditing standards, ethics of professional accounting, practical working techniques and reports.
Prerequisites: BUS 363 and 460.


BUS 470 Seminar in Special Topics

An opportunity for faculty and advanced students to study topics of current and unique importance which are not contained in the general curriculum. Topics vary on the basis of interest expressed by students and faculty.
Prerequisite: Consent of the instructor. Upon request.


BUS 485 Internship
Full course or one and one half course

Provides senior business students with controlled, on-the-job experience with businesses, government agencies or institutions. May be taken during the regular term with part-time employment of 18 to 20 hours weekly or during the Summer Term with 36 to 40 hours per week. Term project required. Applications should be made early in the semester preceding registration and are reviewed on the basis of: academic grade-point average, faculty recommendations, professional progress and demonstrated interest. Not repeatable for credit. Pass/no pass grading.
Prerequisites: Major within Center for Business and Economics, senior standing and approval of the CBE Internship Coordinator.


BUS 485 Internship in Logistics and Transportation Management
Half to One and One Half Course

This course is a controlled, on the job experience with participating companies, agencies and institutions in the field of logistics and transportation management. It can taken during the regular term with part-time employment of 18 to 20 hours weekly, or during Summer term with 36 to 40 hours per week. A term project is required of students taking an internship. Applications should be made in the semester preceding registrations. The course is not repeatable for credit and is graded on a Pass/No Pass basis.
Prerequisite: A major in Logistics and Transportation Management, and Senior Standing.


BUS 491 Small Business Institute

Applied study with another student under the guidance of a member of the CBE. Actual consulting cases are assigned in collaboration with the Chicago Office Of Management Assistance of the U.S. Small Business Administration. Practical training for students to apply and to supplement their academic theory and preparation in addressing real-life problems in an actual business environment.
Prerequisites: Major in Center for Business and Economics and senior standing with a cumulative grade-point average of 2.5 or better.
